Katsu-Hama: Reviews & Ratings
This jap restaurant has been my go-to whenever I'm in new york. My ultimate comfort food whatever season it is. I cant recommend and rate this enough. I always order the same thing and it hits me hard every single time. I order this combo, cheese tonkatsu with tempura and potato croquette. Tastes quality and everything goes well together. Paired with Sapporo, my fave japanese beer. Service was quick and the staff are fairly nice. I always dine solo so I dont really have to wait that long. Atmosphere was perfect for me too.
Great katsu spot in Manhattan! If you’re looking for Japanese food in the area, this is the place to go. The katsu was crispy and juicy, and the staff were friendly. The food was served quickly, which was great. I’d definitely come back again.
The katsu was very good. Great crisp and not greasy. Loved their homemade sauce that went with it. I do think the prices are a little high for the portion sizes but it's also NYC. The tables are also a bit cramped which can make it hard if you've got accessibility issues.
Katsu Hama is a no-frills Japanese spot specializing in pork katsu, and they might just be the masters of it. It is possibly the best I’ve had outside of Japan. The katsu is surprisingly light, not greasy at all, and I didn’t feel heavy/“yeet hay” after finishing the entire set. I went on a weekday night and didn’t have to wait for a table. The restaurant has plenty of seating, though it felt a bit understaffed. *5th Avenue Set $25 I wanted to try a bit of everything so I got one of their assorted sets, which came with pork loin, prawn, and shrimp cream croquette. I felt like this is a smart move as I was so amazed by how delicious the prawn and the croquette were, even though they specialize in pork. The prawn was HUGE, meaty and bouncy, while the croquette was creamy with bits of shrimp meat. *Berkshire Pork Loin Katsu Curry $27 I personally prefer the pork loin over this berkshire pork loin, which was more expensive but somehow tougher than the pork loin. It was indeed meatier, but it was tougher. The curry though was surprisingly delicious. They didn’t only use store-bought curry cubes as I could taste bits of beef (?) in the curry. ** Set A comes with miso soup, cabbage salad, and potato salad, while Set B is about $2 cheaper and comes with everything except the potato salad.
Casual katsu place in midtown. The katsu is very good, crispy not greasy, tender but with a nice chew. The fried shrimp is also really good. We ordered the sashimi salad and tofu agedashi. Both were served after we received our main dish, a timing issue. Either way I would skip both these dishes next time. The fish was fresh but the salad and dressing were meh. The tofu was a bit soggy. Stick to the katsu which comes with shredded cabbage that you douse with their homemade dressing that was very good. I got the katsu curry, curry was delish. Also tried the KATSUDON also very good. We had the Berkshire pork but you can opt for the regular pork if you want. Just rating the Katsu, would give it 5 stars
I read the latest comments and I’m surprised about the service critics as the host was very friendly and efficient when he saw us with our toddler. Wait time was around 8 minutes for lunch. The Berkshire Loin Katsu Teishoku was Wow! Juicy and lots of flavor, good presentation. Chicken Katsu Curry was very very crispy! Loved it! I can’t remember the last time I had one like that. Perfect juicy and crispy! I wish it had more pieces! The rice was also very good and the curry sauce was very good, not as spicy and it had some ingredient that made it taste a bit different than the traditional, more to a little sweetness at the end. The service from the rest of the team was very good. It’s the first we go to a restaurant where the server understand our needs with a toddler and offered to bring us the rice bowl for him in advanced! Love that! We will certainly come back and I’d Highly Recommend it!
Their katsu is really good very similar to Japan. Nice juicy tender chunk of meat with light but crispy exterior. Their portion sizes are also hugeeee. None of us could finish and had to take almost half home. I like that it comes with the cabbage salad and miso soup so the meal is balanced. I did not love the curry tho. It’s too sweet for me personally. I would get one of the katsu sets instead of curry next time.
Came on a weeknight and had to wait 15-20min to be seated. Not sure if they take reservations but the wait was acceptable. (Although I wish there was another entrance or pick up spot for the online delivery because the entrance got crowded so quickly with ppl waiting to be seated and delivery guys waiting for their order) We ordered the sashimi salad and was surprised how big the sashimi was cut. I ordered the 5th ave special and it didn’t disappoint. I love how it came with a side of raw cabbage to have some veggies with the fried food. Overall large in portion, friendly staff, and good food. I wish there was a ventilation system where there’s more air circulation!
